Recycling Of A Different Kind

When you hear the phrase recycling, you might immediately think of those green plastic bins that you see at the office, or at some stores. You would certainly see these in neighborhoods at various curbsides. But there are many ways that you can recycle besides saving up soda cans, newspapers, and glass bottles. You can recycle the items that you already have in your home.
This might surprise you but think about it. Have you ever been to a thrift store? Do you recognize the items that are in the store? Do you feel like these are some things that might be in your home? Of course you do! That's because at some point, a person got tired of these items, and instead of just dumping these in the trash, they decided to take these to a thrift store as a donation.
If you thought about it, you wouldn't have to think too hard about items that are just taking up space and collecting dust in your home. You might have thought about getting rid of this stuff, but you don't have any idea of what to do with it, and you don't want to just put these in the trash. Putting these things in the trash might take up too many bags, or worse, they might attract "dumpster divers" to your door.
There is a way to part with these items without attracting strangers to your front door, and that saves trash waste and other resources. Let's take a look at some things that are cluttering your home, and how you can part with them.
Books and paper goods: There is probably a good chance that you have a small collection of various books that you've either been "meaning to read", or have read, and the book is just laying around. If you have kids, it's certain that they have books. Start your own household book drive. Tell everyone to gather up all the books that they aren't reading, or haven't read in the past few months. For the kids, you can tell them to select 3 of their absolute books that they can't stand to part with. The rest have to go!
When everyone has cleaned off the shelves and the closets from the books, you can call a local charity to see if they do household pick ups. If they do, they might tell you that they will collect your books, but only with household items. This is okay, as long as you find out that they can come to your home to collect these things. This leads to magazines. They have to go. Other paper goods can be old bills. Buy yourself a shredder, shred them, and then put the shredded pieces in a recycling bin. Not only are you recycling you are removing clutter, as well.
Old toys for kids and grown ups: Kid's toys are obvious. If they aren't playing with them anymore, or if they have outgrown them, collect them.
Grown up toys are small kitchen appliances, like a blender, toaster, coffee maker, etc. If you aren't using it, it's taking up shelf space. They need to be recycled by donating to a worthy cause.
Ask the person who does the yard work about any tools out in the garage that aren't being used anymore. Yes, the lawnmower from 1975 has to go, along with any other "treasures" that are sitting around collecting rust.
Clothes: This is a sore spot for some women. They hate to part with clothes. Women always have clothes that they will fit back into "someday". Bottom line, if you haven't worn it in the past year, recycle it.
Now where does all of this stuff go? They can go to thrift stores, or homeless shelters. There are people who would be more than happy to wear your old clothes, and read your old books. An old toy for your child is a new toy for a child in need. So you are doing your part to recycle, and to also help those in need just by clearing out stuff you no longer use.
