Why Recycle Plastic Bags?
Recycling Your Plastic Bags Will Recycle The Planet For Future Generations
by Albert Jefferson
How easy it is when you go to the store to allow the assistant who is bagging the groceries to load them all
into flimsy, plastic bags. Bags that are given away by the hundreds of thousands by outlets, and they are seen
all over. Of course there are a number of discussions concerning banning such bags, although so far nothing
has been done to prevent them from being used everywhere - from a mom-and-pop shop to the biggest
retailers. Stores like them due to the fact that they tend to be inexpensive, plus they are not very hard to hand
out. Customers favor them because they happen to be easy to use as well as being dispensable.
Although plastic bags have been made to be discarded, it is possible to help out Mother Earth by recycling
them as an alternative. Don't assume that you can't recycle the bags; it is possible to include them with the
other plastics that you recycle on a normal basis (check with your recylcing company). Or they can go in the
recycling containers that a lot of the larger stores have created for that specific purpose.
A few people, however, reuse them for garbage, cat litter, yard debris, among other things, so the bags serve a
second purpose. Although if they are used like this they will eventually get thrown away - which isn't very good
for the planet in the long run.
Therefore it is better to recycle the bags properly, to prevent them from ending up in landfills. It takes plastic
forever to biodegrade (it is estimated to take 1,000 years), and the more bags that continue to go in the
landfills the harder it is for the planet to survive. If for some reason you are not interested in setting up a
recycling regiment for the plastic, glass, and paper which you use at home, it is still possible monitor the
plastic that you're handed while shopping.
Once you're home, gather them up and shove the lot into one bag. Load them into the back of the car, and
drop them off on you next shopping trip. In this way it will not be an inconvenience to you, because it is not
necessary to travel to a specific place to hand them back. Plus your house will not be drowning in plastic bags
or your trash bin filled with the recyclable bags.
There are a lot of people who don't recycle because they don't want the hassle, although ensuring that plastic
bags are recycled doesn't not have to be challenging. It is possible for it to be effortless and manageable, so
why not get your family involved so you don't feel like you're the only one who's managing the work of
ensuring plastic bags find their way into the hands of those who will recycle them.
Another approach to minimizing plastic bag wastage is by using green shopping bags otherwise known as go
green bags. You can read more about the go green bags by visiting suite101.com.
By bringing your own bag, you reduce the need for both new bags and the recycling of used bags. Using a
cotton or canvas bag is an even better alternative, because the materials are renewable and biodegradable.
Some stores will even give you money back for bringing your own bag. Using your own bag will help you to do
your part to reduce the impact on Planet Earth.
